Garland W. Yarborough's “Following My Dreams” was last displayed at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books on April 23-24, 2022, at the University of Southern California campus, Los Angeles, CA.

Readers found this book intriguing because it tells the true story of a little Oklahoma boy who was born and raised in poverty. When he was in school, he had trouble, particularly in the areas of reading and math.

His mother, not his teachers, guided him through his early years of learning to read and write. Several “paddlings” and other school disciplinary procedures were the results of his fighting in an attempt to protect himself.

Faced with the prospect of being taken to a juvenile detention facility, he hatched a plan to board a train headed north with King, a dog he pledged he would never let out again. While the train was rolling, he had even practiced jumping out of a boxcar! He'd miss his family, but he wouldn't be going to a facility for troubled youth.

It was in the fifth grade, with the support of his mother, that he began to make progress. He quickly rose to the top of his class in every subject. He excelled intellectually, but he also excelled on the athletic field.

At the age of five, he was already playing on the basketball and baseball teams for the seventh and eighth graders in his school. His interests included medicine, rocketry, mathematics, and the cosmos. Because of his lack of formal education, he had little hope of realizing his ambitions.

However, he never lost up on his hopes and goals. In the end, his hopes and ambitions were realized due to his dedication and tenacity.
